Flying Bi is inspired by the shape and significance of the Jade Bi disc, an important artifact of the Liangzhu culture. This elegant floating pavilion gently oscillates with the wind, evoking a sense of freedom and protection. The translucent balloon's appearance, combined with the ever-changing colors of the sky, recalls the materiality of jade while introducing new yet familiar feelings.
The Pavilion challenges conventional understanding of gravity by reversing the direction of loads. The lighter-than-air structure creates a space that imposes no weight on the ground. The balloon is made of high-performance polyethylene thin film filled with helium to generate lift.
The cables securing the balloon to the ground and supporting the net are woven in a hyperboloidal pattern. The top surface features thin-film photovoltaic cells installed to harness energy from the sun and distribute it to users through wireless charging spots for mobile devices.
The site on Jade Island has been carefully selected to welcome both locals and visitors, facilitating their encounters and exchanges. Flying Bi offers an iconic and comfortable vantage point from which to admire the beautiful panorama surrounding Jade Island.
